Rebels Will Play for A Championship

Dylan DeLucia blanked the pigs from Arkansas 2-0. It was a masterful outing. Nolan, the pig hurler, also had a good outing and all the Rebels could scrape up was two runs, but those two runs were plenty. The Rebels will play Oklahoma’s Sooners for the national championship. It is a best-of-three series and the first game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 pm.
Of the big three sports (football, basketball, baseball) this is the first time in my lifetime that Ole Miss has played for a championship, much less won a championship. The last time the Rebels won a national title was in 1962 in football. So, it is a big deal if you look at it from that perspective.
College baseball, too, is significantly less corrupt than the other two sports and is more in-line with the amateurism that ought to characterize college athletics. In football, Division 1 serves as a de facto minor league for hte NFL, and to a somewhat lesser degree basketball does the same for the NBA. Major League Baseball supports its own minor leagues, so college baseball scrapes up players who either don’t make the minors or who actually want an education (imagine that). So, what you end up getting is a rougher product in which the shortstop will sometimes duff a ball, or a pitcher will bean two batters in a row, and so forth, and it is lovely to behold.
Bring on the Sooners, and may the best team win!
