The Ole Miss Rebels are bringing back the Egg Bowl trophy to Oxford, Mississippi. The 17-7 victory over the Bulldogs didn’t have offensive fireworks and instead was a defensive battle. Neither team found paydirt in the first half with Ole Miss taking a 3-0 lead at halftime. During the second half, The Rebels found creative ways to score enough points to win.

Always a bittersweet game because it closes out the regular season. The Rebels finished with a record of 10-2, a stellar season for Ole Miss by any measure. For what it’s worth, at the six game mark when the Rebels were 5-1, I predicted they’d drop games to Auburn and Georgia and go 9-3.

Highlights of the season have to include a 55-49 track meet victory over LSU. The lowest point was the drubbing by Georgia, a game that really took the wind out of Ole Miss’ sails. The team never really looked the same after that.

Ole Miss will get invited to a bowl game, but a significant proportion of its players will sit it out, as is the fashion nowadays; it won’t be the same team, so to my mind, the season is over, and really, college football is over. In preparation for this year’s Egg Bowl, I watched a few of those old games from the 1980s, and boy, was it is a different game back then. Certainly, it still had the feel of amateurism, all those boys from Ole Miss were Mississippians. That’s gone, and it is a big loss, I think. Nothing gold can stay. I’m not going to belabor the point, though. Doesn’t matter anyway.

Hotty Toddy!
