Sharp CD Players
Sharp players don't get a lot of love, but I find the Sharp line of CD players interesting for several reasons. Firstly, the DX-677 is the first player I owned when I was a kid, at least that's what I believe to be true based on my faulty memories of it. Certainly, it was of that last generation, but I can't be certain because they all look so similar.
Secondly, as far as I can tell, all of the Sharp units were made in Japan. It is as if all the other competitors, around 1990 or so, moved production to China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sharp just didn't make that move. Sharp seems to withdraw from the market in 1991 or 1992. These are mass-market players, but they are fast and suprisingly robust and sturdy.
First-Generation Players, Approximately 1982-1984
I have never seen any of these players on Ebay.
Early Second-Generation Players, Approximately 1984-1987
These players are also rare on the secondary market.
Late Second-Generation Players, Approximately 1987-1991
These players are easily acquired on the secondary market, for the most part. Some are easier to find than others. The most desireable of these would probably be the DX-200 and the DX-R250.
Dot-Matrix Display
LCD - Final Design released
As far as I can tell, this was the final chassis released by Sharp. The dual-DAC DX-200 and DX-250 seem to be the most sophisticated units.
